Of First Importance!

If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile… (I Cor. 15:17)

What would you say if one of your grandchildren or adult children were to ask you what you believe is the most important thing you know? The apostle Paul’s answer to that question is the resurrection of Jesus… and our promised resurrection when Christ returns.

“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins (the reason we observe Good Friday), that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (vs. 3-4).

The resurrection is of paramount importance to all things, because if it is not true, we are fools who practice a faith that is a lie—it is useless to claim a faith in something that is not true.

Tomorrow is Easter, Resurrection Day! We celebrate because it is true—He is risen… He is risen indeed! Without this truth there is no point in our celebrations or Christianity. If Christ is not raised from the dead, then we are still lost in our sins with no hope for today or eternity. The Easter bunny cannot save us.

The Good News we want our children and grandchildren to know is that Christ is risen. For us who know Him and put our faith in Him, we know we will also rise with Him when He comes again.

May I suggest that as you gather with your families this Easter for worship and dinner afterwards, that you ask this question at the dinner table, “What is the most important thing we know to be true?” May your answer be: That Christ is risen from the dead! Hallelujah!

If you want to leave a legacy worth leaving for the generations that follow you, let it not be stories about the Easter bunny, but the legacy of Christ’s resurrection. Nothing is more important.
