Honor Your Father Campaign

by Cavin Harper

GrandPause: The fundamental deception of Satan is the lie that obedience can never bring happiness. R. C. Sproul

Only one of the Ten Commandments comes with a promise attached to it: “Honor your father and mother so that you may live long in the land.” God must give some unique importance to this seemingly inconspicuous command to attach a promise to it.

We just celebrated Mother’s Day last week as part of the commandment to honor our mothers and fathers. With Father’s Day just around the corner, I want to encourage all my readers to get involved in the Honor Your Father campaign being promoted in churches across America as a way to begin putting into practice this command of God.

There are more than enough examples of fatherless homes in our land today. Sadly, fatherlessness is a huge problem. I know that for some of you, the idea of honoring your father when he wasn’t much of a father can seem unrealistic—if not too much to ask. But I want to challenge that thinking in light of what God’s Word teaches us—something He takes very seriously.

Notice that God never placed any conditions on His command to honor our mothers and fathers based upon some standard of worthiness or age limitations. We are to do it because it pleases the Lord and it moves Him to bless us in the process. It’s easy to honor dads who have been great dads. It’s another ball game when we a relationship with our dad is painful, or non-existent.

Imagine what might happen if we were to takes seriously God’s command to honor our father (and mothers) without conditions. Is it possible we might see God do some things we never dreamed possible? Might there be some dads who begin to change and repent? It is possible, but even if it doesn’t happen, we are told to do it.

So, as we approach another special set aside for honoring a parent (Father’s Day), I urge you to ask God how He would ask you to honor your father right now. Take a moment and visit the Honor Your Father Today web site. Follow this link to find some practical tools for honoring your father and to see some videos featuring Tony Dungee, the Duggers, John Trent and Dennis Rainey. Hear what they have to say and make a decision to link arms with other sons, daughters and grandchildren who are part of this Honor Your Father campaign.

If your church is not already committed to being part of the huge movement spurred on by the Honor Your Father campaign, go to your pastor and ask him to consider involving your church. It may be that God will use this to awaken among dads in your community a new understanding of how important dads are to their families. It could even be the beginning of a fresh wind revival in our land. Join with the CGN family and me as we choose to honor our fathers according to God’s command, and that we may know God’s blessing.
