Are You a Catalytic or Catatonic Grandparent?

by Cavin Harper

“Even when I am old and gray…I will declare Your power to the next generation, Your might to all who are to come.”  Psalm 71:18

In 2007 Michelle Rhee became Chancellor of the District of Columbia Public Schools, one of the worst school systems in America. With declining test scores, graduation and enrollment, in three years of service, Michelle became a catalyst for change. In the face of huge opposition and controversy, she reversed the trends and produce remarkable growth in all areas during her brief tenure.

Catalytic people don’t cave when the odds appear insurmountable. They don’t make excuses about why something can’t be done or divert the responsibility elsewhere. Catalytic people just do what must be done. Catatonic people don’t seem to care, and so the idea of changing things is not even on their radar.

Today’s grandparents must face challenges not unlike what Michelle Rhee faced. Things today are much different than the world we knew as children. At times, it may feel overwhelming and even heartbreaking, but

God promised that everything we need for life and godliness has already been given to us (2 Peter 1:3). Based upon that promise, we remain undaunted in our devotion to tell the next generations the truth.

As catalytic grandparents we understand that we are but agents thrown into the mix to draw our grandchildren to Him and watch the transformations by His hand. With faith firmly secured in Christ, we do not fear or turn our backs on the challenges of today. Rather, we turn head-on into the storm holding fast to the promises of God and His divine power. Catatonic grandparents are only concerned about their own agendas and safety.

Michelle Rhee became a catalyst for change on behalf of the children of Washington DC by her own courage and strength. Imagine the transformation that God is waiting to do in our lives and the lives of our grandchildren when we live as catalytic followers of Christ by His power! Prayer is the combustion chamber from which our lives our infused with the power of the Holy Spirit to engage the battle before us. Catalytic Christian grandparents are compelled to kneel before the heavenly Father to intercede with great effect for the next generations.

Will you pray, not only in your own closet, but linked in spirit and purpose with other grandparents as well? You can start a G@P (Grandparents@Prayer) group in your area. You can also participate in the upcoming global Grandparent’s Day of Prayer on September 13th. Catalytic Christian grandparents pray! Will you take up the cause…for your grandchildren?

GRANDPAUSE: War Room opens in theaters across the country on August 28th for a limited engagement. This powerful story about the power of prayer should be seen by every parent and grandparent. I urge you to go see it. Take your adult children along with you if you can.
